Pye to conduct modern classics in September

Our musical director David Pye returns to conduct a program of twentieth century classics on Sunday 27 September.  Australian Graeme Koehne’s Tivoli Dances brim with affection and humour and won the composer the 2009 APRA Music Award for Orchestral Work of the Year. The Four Last Songs for soprano and orchestra are the final completed works of Richard Strauss in which the composer contemplates his own death. The remainder of the program is given over to evocations of Finland, courtesy of Jean Sibelius’ two magical symphonic poems En Saga (a fairy tale or saga) and the overtly nationalistic Finlandia.
