Rehearsals are underway for our next performance Concert Fantastique on 24 November. FSO players are enjoying coming to grips with the technical and musical challenges offered by works of Berlioz (Symphony Fantastique), Pye (Clarinet Fantasy) and Wagner.
Guest conductor Alan Lourens is providing enthusiastic leadership.
All three works call for a large orchestra – in particular the Pye and Berlioz call for a battery of wind and percussion players. For example, Berlioz, known for his imaginative use of the orchestra, features no less than four different sized clarinets (in E-flat, C, B-flat and A) in the course of his Symphony.
